Wards 7 & 8 DC Prevention Center

drug-free youth... It's about families and caring adults

The DC Prevention Center for Wards 7 & 8 (Wards 7 & 8 DCPC) is a collaborative venture with the DC Department of Behavioral Health (DBH) and Bridging Resources In Communities, Inc. (BRIC), the lead community based agency for this initiative – a truly innovative public-private partnership.

The Wards 7 & 8 DCPC utilizes a public health, social development model based upon the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Strategic Prevention Framework to engage in population/community level prevention that utilizes three core functions based upon evidence-based
practices and logic-model based action plans to address priority risk factors and target outcomes.

Example of Community Change: On July 13, 2012, DC Mayor Vincent Gray; Chief of Police, Cathy L. Lanier; Director of the DC Department of Health, Dr. Mohammad N. Akhter; and the Director of the DC Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs (DCRA), Nicholas A. Majett along with several of our community and youth leaders, held a press conference followed by a community walk through of 13 stores where illegal drug paraphernalia, tobacco and synthetic drug products were being sold. Resulting in changes in the laws, better enforcement of the laws –including massive seizures of illegally sold products and stores being shut down, DC businesses education (DCRA “Make The Right Choice” campaign) and DC community wide education (DBH “K2 Zombie DC” campaign)

Our three core functions are:

  • Community Education (provide current, relevant prevention/drug facts information)
  • Community Leadership (develop new/strengthen existing prevention networks)
  • Community Changes (work with the networks in action plan implementation)

Our Vision

Our vision is to support a healthy and drug free District of Columbia that supports communities as a place where all children are safe, drug free and supported by a network of caring families, community organizations, and faith based organizations. The success of this vision for our city involves strategic planning and integrated prevention systems that reduce risk factors in each Ward. Accordingly, we will continue to identify these prevalent risk factors within Wards 7&8 by engaging in community conversations and trainings designed to develop and sustain an infrastructure of community leadership that will function at the Ward and District level.

For ALL of the communities in Wards 7 & 8, we also offer and host:
  • Drug Facts Materials (including Local Drug Use and Drug Access Data)
  • Structured Trainings and Workshops increasing knowledge, skills, and awareness of drug use trends and indicators. (Available Upon Request)
  • Community Conversations & Action Planning (Underage Drinking, Emerging Drug Trends, Risk & Protective Factors, Local Conditions)
The target populations for this initiative are youth ages 8 to 18 along with those in the community that influence them (e.g., peers, families, parents/caregivers). Through our prevention networks we engage in neighborhood level action planning and implementation that also focuses on specific populations (e.g. youth, seniors, parents) and specific community hubs (e.g. recreation or community centers, schools, churches). Ultimately, the neighborhood and Ward level efforts of the four DC Prevention Centers provide a sustainable infrastructure that will help the District strengthen substance abuse prevention efforts over the long-term.
